I started a journey, a deconstruction of my entire life. What I learned is that my true self was calling out for me. It began when I had both kids in the stroller, stressed and tired, someone asked, “What do you do for fun?” I could not think of one thing. She persisted, “What fills your cup?” I finally said, “I used to paint.”
I used to paint. After I graduated college, I worked as a Speech Therapist during the day. In the evening, at home alone. One evening, I picked up some acrylics and canvas board and started to paint. At first, I painted for the distraction but quickly realized it brought me joy. Real, enthusiastic, incredible joy. Finally, I could express my creative side. Growing up, serious art was discouraged.
Life has a way of presenting pathways through. My career in speech pathology led me to working with kids on the Autism Spectrum. A big part of my work with these kids, many of whom couldn’t communicate in traditional forms, opened up through art. My artistic side thrived in this setting where I could “speak” without words, where these kids could communicate and learn through art.
Art therapy seemed like a perfect next step forward and so I started down the path by taking art classes at the local community college. I quickly realized that I didn’t want to watch others create–I wanted to create.
I found an atelier style art school in Denver and launched my dream of becoming an artist. Each step along my journey to this point, has helped me peel back layers so that I could find the real me. .
Since starting my career as a Professional Artist, I am living a very different life, one that is more authentically me. I am now a proud Queer Artist exploring oppression, dismantling the patriarchy and religious trauma. Everyday, I feel joy at my life steeped in creativity.
